Clinical questions are sorted into two different types: Background or Foreground

Background questions are concerned with general knowledge.

  • Ask a who, what, where, when, or why.
  • Concerning a disorder, test, treatment, or other aspect of health care. 

Foreground questions are concerned with specific knowledge to make informed clinical decisions.

  • Deal with specific type of patient or population.
  • Are more complex than background questions.
  • Are best suited to the PICO format.
